Modern zoos are evolving their approach to animal welfare, but standards vary enormously. Evidence-based welfare assessment tools are transforming how zoos evaluate and improve animal wellbeing.
Zoo animal welfare spans an enormous range from internationally accredited institutions with sophisticated behavioral welfare programs to roadside attractions where animals spend their lives in severely inadequate conditions. Modern welfare science has moved beyond absence of suffering toward positive welfare - environments that enable positive behavioral expression, choice, and control. This requires species-appropriate space, social groupings, enrichment programs, and management that respects individual animal preferences. The welfare of zoo animals is also complicated by their inability to choose captivity and the limited options for animals that cannot be returned to the wild.
