Rabbit GI Stasis: Recognition, Prevention, and Emergency Response

Gastrointestinal stasis is a life-threatening emergency in rabbits that kills within 24-48 hours if untreated. Recognition and rapid response are essential for rabbit welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

GI stasis causes severe abdominal pain from gas accumulation and rapidly becomes fatal as the rabbit's condition deteriorates. The welfare urgency is extreme - rabbits that appear unwell in the evening are often critical or dead by morning if untreated. Because rabbits hide illness, mild cases are often missed until the rabbit is already in significant distress. Prevention is the welfare priority: high-fiber hay-based diet, stress reduction, regular exercise, and prompt treatment of any condition that causes pain or stress that could trigger secondary stasis. Rabbit owners must recognize that any change in eating or defecation habits in a rabbit warrants immediate veterinary assessment.
