Exotic Pets: Welfare Challenges of Non-Traditional Species

Exotic pets including reptiles, birds, small mammals, and amphibians are popular but often have welfare needs that are poorly understood or impossible to meet in captivity.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Exotic pet welfare encompasses some of the most severe welfare harms in the companion animal sector. Wild-caught animals experience capture trauma, transport stress with high mortality rates, and then confinement in conditions that cannot replicate their natural environment or meet their complex behavioral needs. Even captive-bred exotic animals may have needs that cannot be adequately met in typical home settings. The welfare case for most exotic pet keeping is weak: the animal's needs are not met, natural behaviors are suppressed, and the owner derives enjoyment from an animal whose welfare is compromised. The expanding exotic pet trade continues to drive wild population pressure and welfare harm at enormous scale.
