Free-range egg production is perceived as high-welfare, but the reality varies significantly. Understanding what free-range actually means helps consumers make genuinely informed choices.
Free-range labeling creates welfare expectations that are frequently not met in large commercial operations. The image of hens ranging freely outdoors is at odds with the reality of many certified free-range operations where thousands of birds compete for access to a small door, outdoor areas are bare and unattractive to birds, and dominant hens prevent subordinate birds from accessing the range at all. Genuine welfare improvement requires not just outdoor access but outdoor areas that birds actually use and benefit from - requiring space, vegetation, predator protection, and multiple exit points. Consumer pressure for meaningful standards has driven some improvement, but free-range remains a misleading signal in many markets.
