Adequate clean water is fundamental to equine health and welfare. Understanding water requirements and common barriers to intake prevents dehydration and its serious welfare consequences.
Dehydration in horses causes welfare harm through impaired thermoregulation, increased colic risk from gut motility problems, reduced performance capacity, and in severe cases, organ dysfunction. The seemingly simple welfare requirement of adequate water access is frequently compromised by frozen water in winter, automatic waterer malfunctions, competition from dominant horses, or simply insufficient water provision during transport and competition. Welfare-conscious horse management treats water provision as the highest welfare priority - ensuring quality, quantity, and accessibility of water at all times rather than assuming horses will find and consume adequate water without management attention.
