Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease in dogs that can cause kidney and liver failure and also poses risks to human health.
Leptospirosis causes severe multi-organ disease with significant suffering. Intensive treatment including antibiotics, IV fluids, and sometimes dialysis is required. Even with treatment, mortality is significant and some survivors have permanent organ damage. Vaccination is highly effective prevention and represents a clear welfare and public health priority, particularly for dogs with outdoor or water exposure.
