Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is equivalent to Alzheimer's disease in dogs, causing disorientation and distress in senior dogs requiring compassionate management.
Dogs with CDS experience confusion, anxiety, and disorientation that is distressing and frightening. They may not recognize familiar family members, become lost in their own homes, and experience disrupted sleep that affects both dog and owner welfare. Early recognition and management maintains quality of life longer. The welfare question is not whether the dog is suffering - they are - but how to minimize that suffering while maintaining dignity and quality of life through the progression.
