Rabbit GI Stasis: Recognition and Emergency Care

GI stasis is a life-threatening emergency in rabbits caused by slowed gut movement, requiring immediate recognition and veterinary care.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

GI stasis is a welfare emergency where the window between recognizable illness and death is extremely narrow. Rabbit owners must learn to recognize early signs - reduced droppings and appetite change - and act immediately. Rabbits that stop eating must be seen by a rabbit-savvy vet within hours. The stoic nature of rabbits means obvious distress signals (tooth grinding, hunched posture) indicate significant pain. Any rabbit owner who cannot recognize GI stasis is not equipped to provide adequate welfare for this species.
