Broiler lameness is one of the highest-impact welfare problems in commercial poultry production due to the enormous number of animals affected. Chickens that cannot walk properly cannot access food, water, and comfortable resting spots, leading to chronic hunger and isolation. Assessment studies show that lame broilers show clear pain responses and altered behavior indicating suffering. Transition to slower-growing breeds reduces but does not eliminate lameness.
