Cat Hyperthyroidism: Radioactive Iodine as the Gold Standard Treatment

Radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy is the most effective and curative treatment for feline hyperthyroidism, offering excellent welfare outcomes compared to lifelong medication or surgical thyroidectomy.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Feline hyperthyroidism causes significant welfare harms through chronic weight loss, muscle wasting, heart disease, hypertension (which can cause sudden blindness from retinal detachment), anxiety, and the cognitive impairment of untreated disease. The welfare choice between treatment options depends on individual cat circumstances, but I-131 offers the best long-term welfare outcome for most cats: a single treatment achieving cure, avoiding daily medication stress, and eliminating progressive disease. The welfare cost of I-131 is the isolation period required for radiation safety - this is stressful for cats and difficult for owners emotionally. However, most cats tolerate the isolation period well, and the welfare trajectory post-treatment is excellent. Delaying treatment for financial reasons or treatment reluctance allows progressive deterioration that is entirely preventable.
