Cat FIV Management: Positive Welfare for Cats with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lifelong infection but well-managed FIV-positive cats can live comfortably for many years. Understanding the virus and welfare management enables good quality of life.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

FIV management demonstrates how a viral diagnosis does not determine welfare outcomes - management quality does. FIV-positive cats in shelters are frequently euthanized or overlooked for adoption based on the diagnosis alone, despite evidence that well-managed FIV-positive cats live normal-quality lives for many years. The welfare priority is preventing transmission to other cats through indoor-only living, monitoring for and treating secondary infections promptly, and maintaining excellent nutrition and preventive care. The casual transmission misconception - that FIV spreads easily through shared resources - has led to unnecessary euthanasia of healthy positive cats. Education about actual transmission routes (primarily fighting bites) enables more welfare-positive decisions for FIV-positive cats.
