Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), commonly called Cushings disease, is a progressive hormonal condition in older horses requiring lifelong management to maintain quality of life.
PPID causes progressive suffering through laminitis pain, muscle weakness, increased susceptibility to infections, and abnormal thermoregulation. The shaggy coat causes discomfort in warm weather, and associated laminitis can be excruciating. Horses with uncontrolled PPID experience a significantly reduced quality of life. With appropriate veterinary management including medication, dietary adjustments, and regular monitoring, welfare can be substantially improved. Early diagnosis is key to preventing the most severe complications.
