Dermatophytosis (ringworm) is a fungal infection causing skin lesions in cats and is a significant welfare and public health concern requiring prompt and systematic treatment.
Ringworm causes skin discomfort through itching, scaling, and the general discomfort of skin inflammation. While often considered cosmetically concerning rather than seriously welfare-compromising, cats with extensive ringworm lesions experience significant skin irritation that affects normal behavior. The zoonotic nature of the infection adds a welfare dimension - spread to humans (particularly children) causes skin lesions that require treatment. The extensive environmental decontamination required for ringworm eradication can be stressful for cats through repeated bathing and handling. Prompt diagnosis and systematic treatment is the most welfare-conscious approach.
