Parrot Feather Destructive Behavior Welfare

Feather destructive behavior (FDB) in parrots is a complex welfare indicator reflecting psychological distress, medical conditions, or inadequate environmental provision.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

FDB is a significant welfare indicator that should never be dismissed as cosmetic. Feather removal causes physical discomfort and in severe cases can progress to skin mutilation. More fundamentally, FDB signals that the bird's psychological or physical needs are not being met - it is analogous to stereotypic behavior in other species and reflects environmental inadequacy. Parrots are highly intelligent, social species with complex behavioral needs that are extremely difficult to meet in captivity. Birds that develop FDB are often those with the highest cognitive needs housed in the most impoverished environments. Treatment is challenging, making prevention through excellent initial provision crucial.
