Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening emergency in large and giant breed dogs requiring immediate surgery, with prevention through prophylactic gastropexy offering significant welfare protection.
GDV causes extreme suffering and rapid deterioration. The combination of gastric distension causing pain and pressure, circulatory compromise from the volvulus, and endotoxemia from dying stomach tissue creates acute, severe distress. Without surgical intervention within hours, the condition is fatal. Dogs dying from untreated GDV experience extreme pain and fear. Prophylactic gastropexy during neutering surgery for high-risk breeds represents an excellent welfare investment - a one-time procedure during routine surgery that prevents this potentially excruciating and fatal condition. Owners of high-risk breeds should discuss this option with their veterinarian proactively.
