Dog Mange Welfare and Treatment

Mange from Sarcoptes and Demodex mite infestations causes significant welfare harm through intense itching and skin disease, with effective treatments now available for both forms.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sarcoptic mange causes some of the most intense itching possible in dogs. The mites burrowing through the skin create an allergic hypersensitivity reaction causing continuous, agonizing pruritus that prevents sleep and normal behavior. Affected dogs scratch and bite themselves relentlessly, creating self-inflicted wounds that become infected. Dogs with advanced untreated sarcoptic mange develop extensive crusting, hair loss, and secondary infections covering large areas of their body. Demodex in its generalized form causes extensive skin infection and secondary bacterial disease that is deeply painful. Both conditions are now very treatable, making extended welfare compromise from mange a preventable failure.
