Cattle Neonatal Joint Ill Welfare

Joint ill in neonatal calves, caused by bacteremia entering joints through the navel or gut, causes severe pain and permanent disability if not treated promptly and aggressively.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Joint ill causes extreme suffering in young calves. Swollen, infected joints are acutely painful - affected calves are reluctant to stand and bear weight, showing distress when joints are palpated. Multiple joint involvement means calves may struggle to rise, feed, or move. Without prompt and aggressive treatment with appropriate antibiotics, the bacteria damage joint surfaces permanently, condemning the calf to lifelong chronic pain from damaged joints. The preventable nature of most joint ill cases - through adequate colostrum management and navel disinfection - makes the suffering from advanced untreated or undertreated cases particularly concerning.
