Pig Colostrum Management Welfare

Adequate colostrum intake in the first hours of life is essential for piglet survival and welfare, with management interventions ensuring all piglets receive sufficient protection.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Colostrum adequacy in the first hours of life determines the piglet's immunological starting point for its entire life. Piglets that fail to receive adequate colostrum enter an immunological deficit from which they never fully recover, experiencing higher rates of disease, greater severity of infections, and elevated mortality throughout the production cycle. The welfare harm from inadequate colostrum is compounded and prolonged. Ensuring all piglets in a litter receive adequate colostrum - through split suckling management for large litters, supplementation from sows with excess, or commercial colostrum products - is one of the highest-impact welfare interventions in the farrowing house.
