Welfare Considerations

Farmed quail welfare receives relatively little research attention despite the significant numbers involved. Wire-floored cage systems prevent natural ground foraging and cause foot and leg problems. Quail in barren cages exhibit high levels of feather pecking behavior, particularly around the head and neck. As with other poultry, providing litter, cover, and perching opportunities dramatically reduces injurious behaviors and improves welfare outcomes.
