Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disease in senior cats and, when treated appropriately, allows excellent quality of life restoration after a period of significant metabolic suffering.
Hyperthyroidism causes prolonged suffering through the physiological effects of metabolic overdrive. Affected cats experience constant hunger despite weight loss, restlessness, cardiac stress from elevated heart rate, hypertension, and the general malaise of disordered metabolism. Secondary hypertension can cause sudden blindness through retinal detachment - an acutely distressing event. Treatment brings dramatic welfare improvement - treated cats gain weight, become calmer, and show normalization of the behavioral changes hyperthyroidism caused. The welfare goal is early diagnosis before severe organ damage occurs, particularly cardiac hypertrophy and hypertensive complications.
