Prescription renal diets are the most evidence-based nutritional intervention for cats with chronic kidney disease, extending life and improving quality of life.
Chronic kidney disease causes nausea, lethargy, reduced appetite, and declining quality of life in cats. Dietary management significantly slows disease progression and maintains wellbeing. However, if a cat refuses to eat the renal diet entirely, the stress of not eating is itself a welfare concern. A palatable diet that is somewhat less than ideal is better than no food at all. Individualized dietary plans with regular monitoring best serve cat welfare.
