Blowfly strike in sheep is a rapidly deteriorating welfare emergency requiring immediate recognition and treatment to prevent severe suffering and death.
Flystrike causes severe, escalating suffering - the pain of larvae feeding on living tissue combined with toxin-induced systemic illness creates one of the most acute welfare emergencies in sheep farming. Affected sheep are visibly distressed, show abnormal posture and self-directed biting, and deteriorate rapidly. Prevention is far superior to treatment: regular inspection, dagging, and preventive chemicals applied in advance of fly season can eliminate most cases.
