Pododermatitis is inflammation of the paw skin and tissues in dogs, causing pain, lameness, and significant welfare impact if untreated.
Chronic paw pain from pododermatitis significantly reduces quality of life - dogs who cannot walk comfortably are limited in exercise and enrichment. Persistent licking and chewing at painful paws is distressing and self-perpetuating, as moisture promotes infection. Identifying and treating the underlying cause rather than repeatedly treating infections is the welfare-positive approach. Recurrent interdigital furunculosis especially warrants thorough investigation.
