Hepatic Lipidosis in Cats: A Preventable Crisis

Feline hepatic lipidosis is a potentially fatal liver condition triggered by anorexia, requiring emergency nutritional support and underlying cause treatment.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Hepatic lipidosis causes progressive, severe illness - nausea, profound weakness, and the distress of liver failure. The condition is largely preventable by addressing the root cause of anorexia quickly. Any cat not eating for more than 48-72 hours warrants veterinary assessment to identify and treat the underlying reason. Owners who commit to the intensive nursing of tube-fed recovery give their cats an excellent chance of full recovery. Cats who survive are not predisposed to recurrence.
