Tooth resorption is the most common dental disease in cats, causing chronic pain that is often undetected until dental radiography reveals the extent of damage.
Feline tooth resorption is a silent epidemic of dental pain. Studies using dental radiography in cats show the majority of middle-aged and older cats have some degree of resorption, yet most owners are unaware because cats hide dental pain so effectively. The chronic pain of eroding dentinal tubules significantly reduces quality of life. Extraction of affected teeth reliably eliminates the pain source. The welfare case for annual dental radiography - the only way to detect many TR lesions - is compelling for all cats over age 5.
