When individual pig isolation is required for medical reasons, buddy systems maintaining visual or physical contact protect social welfare.
Medical isolation of pigs is sometimes welfare-necessary but itself creates social welfare harm. The solution is not to choose between treatment isolation and social welfare, but to design isolation protocols that provide maximum social contact within medical constraints. A sick pig that can see and smell a familiar pen mate suffers less than one in complete isolation. Buddy systems require additional management effort but meaningfully reduce the welfare cost of necessary isolation events.
