Mud Management for Horses: Protecting Hooves, Skin, and Mental Welfare

Chronic mud exposure causes hoof disease, skin infection, and psychological distress in horses, requiring active management during wet seasons.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Mud creates both physical and psychological welfare problems for horses. Physically, chronic mud exposure causes skin breakdown, fungal infection, hoof disease, and increased biomechanical loading. Psychologically, horses confined to muddy, featureless paddocks without dry resting areas show elevated stress indicators. Active mud management - sacrifice paddocks, rubber matting at gates, appropriate rugging, and skin care protocols - reduces the welfare burden of wet winters substantially. Horses should always have access to at least one dry resting area regardless of paddock conditions.
