Otitis externa is one of the most common reasons dogs visit vets, but recurrent infections reflect inadequately treated underlying causes that perpetuate the welfare burden.
Chronic ear infections cause ongoing pain and discomfort - dogs with recurrent otitis scratch constantly, shake their heads, show pain responses to ear touching, and in severe cases develop permanent ear canal damage. The welfare tragedy of recurrent otitis is that it is usually a symptom of untreated underlying disease (most commonly allergic disease) rather than a primary condition. Treating each infection without addressing the underlying cause creates a welfare-perpetuating cycle. A systematic approach that identifies and manages the primary cause breaks this cycle and provides lasting welfare improvement.
