Coenurosis (Gid) in Sheep: Tapeworm Larva Brain Infection

Coenurosis causes progressive neurological disease in sheep from Taenia multiceps larva migration into the brain, requiring early recognition and appropriate management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Coenurosis causes progressive neurological suffering - affected sheep circle, become disorientated, go blind, and in untreated cases die weeks to months after signs begin. The disease is entirely preventable through controlling the lifecycle: regular tapeworm treatment of all dogs with access to sheep pasture, and preventing dogs from eating sheep offal or carcasses containing brain tissue. Operations that maintain these controls prevent coenurosis entirely. Where disease occurs, prompt identification and either surgical treatment or humane euthanasia prevents prolonged neurological suffering.
