Hypertension affects a significant proportion of cats with underlying disease and causes irreversible organ damage without appropriate monitoring and treatment.
Hypertension in cats causes progressive, silent organ damage until acute events - sudden blindness from retinal detachment, or neurological signs from cerebrovascular damage - reveal advanced disease. Regular blood pressure monitoring in at-risk cats (those with CKD, hyperthyroidism, or over 7 years) enables treatment initiation before irreversible damage occurs. Vision loss from hypertensive retinopathy is the most welfare-significant manifestation - it is largely preventable through appropriate monitoring and treatment, but rarely reversible once retinal detachment has occurred.
