Antibiotic reduction in pig production is essential for antimicrobial resistance control but requires alternative welfare and health management approaches to prevent increased disease burden and suffering.
Antibiotic reduction in pig production is both an AMR control priority and a welfare challenge. Simply removing antibiotics without compensating management improvements results in more disease and suffering in pigs. The welfare of individual sick pigs must not be sacrificed in pursuit of antibiotic reduction targets - sick pigs must still receive effective treatment. The challenge is to reduce prophylactic antibiotic use while improving management to the point where disease incidence falls rather than just treatment rates. This requires investment in housing quality, vaccination, nutrition, and stockperson training that is essential for welfare-positive antibiotic reduction.
