Urban foxes adapted to city environments face unique welfare challenges including road mortality, mange, and persecution while also benefiting from reduced predation and reliable food resources.
Urban foxes exist in a complex welfare context where human resources reduce some stressors while creating others. Road mortality causes acute injury and death at significant rates. Mange causes prolonged suffering in affected individuals who may live for weeks in a deteriorating condition. Human persecution including poisoning and snaring causes acute suffering to targeted individuals. Coexistence programs that address root causes of conflict including poultry protection and waste management reduce the motivation for persecution while improving welfare outcomes for foxes. Mange vaccination programs offer a welfare-positive population-level intervention.
