Despite the welfare and production benefits of precision livestock farming technology, adoption barriers including cost, training, and infrastructure limit uptake particularly among smaller producers.
The welfare potential of precision livestock farming technology is only realized if adoption is widespread enough to improve conditions across the industry rather than only on the most progressive and resource-rich farms. Adoption barriers mean that welfare monitoring technology currently reaches a minority of farm animals. Addressing these barriers through affordable technology development, training provision, connectivity infrastructure investment, and government support programs is essential for realizing the welfare potential of precision farming at scale. Welfare certification schemes that reward or require technology adoption create additional commercial incentives for producers to invest.
