Acute moist dermatitis causes intensely itchy, painful skin lesions in dogs. Rapid treatment prevents escalating self-trauma and reduces welfare impact.
A hot spot is a cycle of intense discomfort: an initial itch triggers licking, which creates moist conditions for bacteria, which cause more itching. The dog cannot stop itself from making the situation worse. The welfare imperative is breaking this cycle rapidly. Clipping the surrounding hair to allow air contact, cleaning the area, and applying appropriate topical or systemic medication provides rapid relief. Leaving a hot spot untreated causes escalating misery and can result in large, deeply infected skin lesions requiring extensive treatment.
