Billions of salmon are produced in hatcheries annually for wild stock enhancement. Hatchery conditions significantly affect fish welfare and post-release survival.
Hatchery salmon are produced at scale in environments that often compromise their welfare before they even reach the wild. High-density rearing in bare concrete tanks causes fin erosion, chronic stress, suppressed immune function, and behavioral abnormalities. Released fish with poor welfare histories show reduced survival - a conservation as well as a welfare failure. Refinement through reduced stocking density, structural enrichment, varied water flows, and improved handling during rearing produces fish that are both healthier and better equipped for survival, serving both welfare and conservation goals.
