Prostatic hyperplasia, cysts, and infections cause pain and urinary difficulty in intact male dogs. Castration resolves most prostatic conditions and significantly improves welfare.
Prostatic disease causes real suffering in intact male dogs, from chronic discomfort with enlarged glands compressing the rectum to acute agony with prostatic abscess and infection. The tragedy is that most prostatic disease is entirely preventable through early castration. For dogs not required for breeding, the welfare case for castration is compelling: elimination of prostatic disease risk, reduced testicular cancer risk, and prevention of perianal fistula. For breeding animals, medical management options allow prostatic health while preserving fertility, but require active monitoring.
