Intervertebral disc disease causes pain and paralysis in dogs. Rehabilitation therapy after surgery significantly improves recovery outcomes and quality of life.
Intervertebral disc disease causes severe acute welfare harm: sudden onset of intense spinal pain, progressive paralysis, and loss of bladder and bowel control. A dog in an acute IVDD episode is in crisis - unable to stand, crying in pain, frightened. Emergency surgical decompression offers the best chance of recovery but does not guarantee it. The rehabilitation phase is where dedicated care translates to welfare outcomes: structured physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, bladder management, pressure sore prevention, and mental enrichment for a dog that cannot exercise normally all determine whether the dog regains comfortable mobility.
