PLN causes progressive kidney damage and protein loss in affected dogs. Early detection and management extend comfortable life and reduce welfare burden.
PLN is an insidious condition that can progress silently while causing progressive kidney damage. By the time clinical signs of fluid accumulation, weight loss, or kidney failure are obvious, significant irreversible damage has occurred. The welfare imperative is screening dogs at risk - particularly predisposed breeds - with regular urine protein-creatinine ratios to identify subclinical proteinuria. Early intervention with ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers, dietary modification, and blood pressure control can meaningfully slow progression and extend quality comfortable life.
