Horse Mare Reproductive Welfare: Foaling and Post-Foaling

Foaling is one of the highest-risk events for mares. Appropriate supervision, environment, and post-foaling care protect mare and foal welfare during this critical period.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Foaling combines the possibility of great joy with significant welfare risk. A dystocia left without intervention can kill both mare and foal within minutes. A retained placenta progressing to toxemia kills mares within days. A rejected foal faces starvation and cold without immediate intervention. The welfare solution is preparation: clean, large, monitored foaling boxes; a clear veterinary emergency contact; daily checking of foal rejection signs; and rapid response when complications arise. The combination of basic preparation and rapid emergency access saves lives and prevents prolonged suffering.
