Rabbits are the third most commonly used laboratory animal species. Applying the 3Rs framework to rabbit research significantly improves individual welfare outcomes.
Laboratory rabbits historically endured some of the poorest conditions of any research species: solitary housing in barren wire cages with minimal human contact. Implementation of the 3Rs - Replacement with non-animal methods, Reduction in numbers, and Refinement of procedures - has progressively improved rabbit welfare in research settings. Group housing programs, environmental enrichment standards, pain management protocols, and the development of alternatives to rabbit-based tests all represent meaningful welfare advances. Continued advocacy for the 3Rs and transparent reporting of welfare outcomes drives further improvement.
