Sun bears have complex cognitive and physical needs that few captive facilities adequately meet, and improved enrichment programs and larger enclosures are essential to their welfare.
Sun bears' complex foraging behavior - including tool use to access termite mounds and honey - means they have substantial cognitive engagement needs that small enclosures with minimal enrichment cannot meet. Zoos that maintain sun bears must commit to naturalistic enclosure design with climbing opportunities, foraging enrichment, and appropriate group composition. Without these, stereotypic behavior is an inevitable welfare indicator.
