Prostatic disease including benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, and prostatic carcinoma causes significant pain and urinary dysfunction in intact and neutered male dogs.
Prostatic disease causes chronic, progressive discomfort in many intact senior male dogs that goes undetected because dogs stoically continue with altered posture and straining that owners may not recognize as signs of pain. Regular veterinary assessment including prostate palpation in intact males over 5 years enables early detection and intervention. Castration, which eliminates BPH risk, is the most significant preventive welfare intervention available.
