Cattle Digital Dermatitis Control

Digital dermatitis is the most prevalent lameness cause in dairy cattle worldwide, causing significant pain, and effective footbath programs and individual treatment dramatically reduce the welfare burden.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Digital dermatitis is both a major welfare problem and a highly treatable one. Herds with effective footbath programs and individual lesion treatment protocols have dramatically lower lameness prevalence than untreated herds. The welfare case for control is clear: active DD lesions cause intense pain that affects mobility, lying time, feed intake, and social behavior. The economic case is equally clear: lame cows produce less milk, have worse reproductive performance, and leave the herd earlier.
