Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency in dogs that is almost entirely preventable, and rapid recognition and first aid dramatically improve survival outcomes.
Heatstroke causes acute, severe suffering - hyperthermia, neurological deterioration, and organ failure produce a profoundly distressing experience before death or recovery. Every case is preventable. The welfare case for public education about heatstroke prevention is compelling: thousands of dogs die unnecessarily every summer from being left in hot cars or over-exercised in hot weather. Simple behavioral changes by owners would eliminate virtually all heatstroke deaths.
