Vaccines are essential for canine health, but adverse reactions ranging from mild soreness to life-threatening anaphylaxis do occur. Understanding risks helps owners and veterinarians respond appropriately.
Vaccine reactions cause genuine suffering ranging from temporary discomfort to life-threatening emergencies. The welfare balance is clearly in favor of vaccination because the diseases vaccines prevent are far more likely to cause severe suffering than reactions are. However, dogs with prior reactions deserve individualized vaccination planning that considers titers, risk exposure, essential versus optional vaccines, and pre-medication protocols. Forcing annual revaccination on dogs with documented serious reactions without individual risk assessment is poor welfare practice.
