Aquaculture is expanding rapidly across Africa as a response to protein demand and pressure on wild fisheries. Welfare standards in the sector lag behind production growth and require urgent attention.
Fish welfare in African aquaculture faces particular challenges: high temperatures increase metabolic rates and oxygen demand while reducing water oxygen-carrying capacity; small-scale operations lack resources for sophisticated welfare management; regulatory frameworks are nascent; and welfare science from European aquaculture has limited applicability to different species and systems. The result is that billions of fish farmed across Africa may experience significant welfare deficits including oxygen stress, disease pressure, and poor slaughter conditions. As production grows to meet protein demand, investing in welfare knowledge and standards now is important both for the fish and for long-term industry sustainability.
