Advances in poultry stunning technology are improving welfare outcomes, but significant gaps remain in adoption, effectiveness monitoring, and coverage of different species.
Poultry stunning welfare technology represents an area of genuine scientific and engineering progress, with controlled atmosphere systems addressing the most significant welfare problem with water bath stunning - conscious shackling. However, the translation from technological availability to industry adoption remains incomplete, with most commercial poultry worldwide still processed using water bath systems. The welfare improvement from widespread CAK adoption would be significant given the scale of poultry processing. Consumer demand for welfare-certified products with specified stunning requirements, combined with regulatory pressure, creates the market and regulatory environment needed to accelerate technology adoption.
