Hibernation (brumation) management for tortoises is a critical welfare skill - improper preparation or hibernation conditions cause preventable deaths.
Tortoise hibernation welfare failures are among the most common causes of preventable death in pet tortoises. The combination of inadequate pre-hibernation preparation, inappropriate temperature conditions, and failure to monitor during hibernation creates multiple welfare risks. A tortoise that emerges from hibernation severely underweight, dehydrated, or sick has experienced preventable suffering. Equally, forcing tortoises that evolved to hibernate to remain active year-round also has welfare costs. Managing this species-specific need requires education and careful implementation.
