Ill-fitting saddles are among the most common causes of back pain and behavioral problems in ridden horses, yet many riders never have saddle fit professionally assessed.
Saddle fit welfare is a widespread but under-recognized problem because the behavioral signs of saddle-related pain - reluctance to work, cold-backed behavior, bucking, girthiness - are commonly misinterpreted as training or temperament issues rather than pain responses. Horses cannot directly communicate that their back hurts; they can only express it behaviorally. Investment in professional saddle fitting and regular reassessment is a fundamental welfare responsibility for all riders, not an optional extra for competition horses.
