Improving hoof health and welfare for working equids in low-resource settings worldwide.
Hoof welfare is one of the most impactful and neglected welfare issues for the world's working equids. Chronic hoof pain degrades both quality of life and economic productivity for animal and owner, creating a strong incentive for intervention. However, qualified farriers are scarce in many regions, and traditional practices including restrictive shoeing and delayed treatment are deeply entrenched. Community-based hoof care training programs that build local capacity have demonstrated sustained welfare improvements, offering a scalable model for resource-limited settings.
